My 01' 325 Trailboss smokes badly when starting. Once it warms up it stops smoking and idles/accelerates normally. Oh, it fouls the plug too and won't start sometimes. Any one have this problem before?? What was the resolution??

Polaris had problems with the top end of these motors wearing out prematurely. The most common problem is that the valve guides wear out, and leak oil into the engine. When you go to start it, it either fouls the plug or starts, then smokes alot as the oil burns off. In your case, there is excessive wear, causing it to smoke longer until the engine warms up and the valve guides expand and seal up. Replacing the valve guides and having the head reconditioned should solve the problem. Also, using a high quality synthetic lubricant, such as Klotz, will make your engine run much longer. We have a 2000 325 Trail Boss running on Klotz, and have never had a single problem with the engine. You may have a bad gasket somewhere, but the valve guides are most likely the problem.

Thanks for the tip. A bit more info though.......... the unit has not had a great deal of use for its age and it didn't smoke before the last oil change at all. But your comment has given me a lead. When I last changed the oil I used Shell Rotella (diesel) motor oil. I've used it for years in my road bikes and the folks at Shell told me it has the best overall engine protection possible because of the "high" pressure environment it has to deal with in those engines. It may be the problem. I'll change back to the Polaris recommended oil and see what happens and post the conclusion on this site.

The oil you are currently running will cause premature wear. What ever you run, make sure it is a full synthetic, such as Klotz or Mobil 1. Polaris oil is ok, but for a few dollars more you can get the best protection out there. Our local Polaris dealer has seen some atv's come in with few miles on them where they used regular motor oil and the top end of the motor just blew up.

Hey thanks for the suggestion. I will pick up some Klotz today and see what happens after the oil change. Hopefully I've not waited to long and done some damage to the engine. Will post my result so that maybe others can bennifit in the future.

Unbeleivable, changed the oil (and filter of course) to Mobile 1 because they didn't have the other . Smoked the first time it started though not as severe. The next time I started it - no smoke whatsoever! Thanks for the advice and I'm thankful that we didn't run it very much on the Rotella. Can't believe that there can be that much difference in oils.
