Sand tires for snow?

I just purchased a 2001 DS650 and would like to be able to ride it during the winter. I live in the snow belt of northwestern PA and my stock tires aren't cutting it. Anyone know if sand paddle tires would work? I checking into the trax system and it's much too costly so I figured maybe paddle tires would be a cheaper alternative that might work fairly well. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks for the help.
