Good evening folks..First post here..I have a 1998 Polaris sportsman 500 and I Have a problem with it..
I have new plug,new fuel filter,clean air filter and have recently installed a new Stator..It starts well,Idles great but when I try to accelerate all I can get is a backfire..somes times through the carb. and sometimes through the exhaust.. any suggestions???

Thanks..As I am new to working on a ATV the Carb looks to be in a small confined place..will I need special tools to get it off?? I can work on a dirt bike but everything is where I can reach it on them!!!

PS I am smelling a gas leak somewhere but have not been able to find it..

It sounds to me as if the carburetor float is sticking. I would recommend taking the carb off, throughly soaking it in carb cleaning solution, cleaning all the ports and idle circuits with a thin wire, and putting a new carb kit in it, making sure there are no leaks after it is reinstalled. Also, check your fuel lines for any cracks, as for this can cause a gas leak, as well as let air into the fuel line which will cause problems. You shouldn't need any special tools, just the basics. They are in a tight spot, so expect to be frustrated by the time you get the carb off.
